Bumpdate | 36 Weeks

4 weeks away from Baby Eden’s due date and I’m officially on maternity leave!  My goal this week is to stay active and maximize my time by running errands and finishing up little projects around the house.  The ENFP in me has to pat myself on the back for everything I’ve done so far, so here’s my list of this week’s accomplishments:

  • packed labor bag
  • went on a Target run (which there will be plenty more of)
  • ordered photos and frames for the our currently sad, bare dining room wall
  • went to a nursing bra fitting (who knew that was a thing?) and bought some bras
  • organized baby shower gifts and hand-me-downs
  • went to a 36th week doctor’s appointment
  • took photos for this week’s bumpdate!

Still to do…

  • organize and clean the nursery (we’ve seriously accumulated so much stuff!)
  • finish decorating the nursery and living room
  • wash baby clothes, blankets and other accessories
  • make a dentist appointment for a regular cleaning
  • pack hospital bag
  • type up birth plan
  • buy a few more things in time for baby’s arrival

Lots of to-do’s, but I’m taking it a step at a time.  Just very thankful to have the time off work to do all these things with time remaining to relax.

Cozy Update: The season of Lent started two weeks ago and we have BANNED THE USE OF SCREENS (aka phone, laptops, and tv) after 7pm.  Before Lent, our approach to relaxation was watching Netflix or YouTube for a few hours, and then spending time on our laptops doing miscellaneous things.  Now, we basically do a combination of eat, talk, nap, clean, shower/bath, meditate, or read before going to sleep.  It’s been a nice change of pace.  Our conversations and time together have upped in quality and we’re definitely clocking in more sleep. (We sleep before midnight nowadays– big shocker for us night owls!)

As Conoon and I near the end of this pregnancy, I can’t help but feel like it’s the end of an era… the “Just Us” era of Cozy.  Even though we dated for 8 years before getting married, it never really felt like it was “just us” until we made that life-long commitment.  So while it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to our lives as we know it, looking ahead, I see that a grander adventure awaits.  An adventure that will test and break us in difficult moments, but make our bond and trust in each other stronger with time.  I’m not afraid because I know we have each other, God, and the overwhelming support of family and friends (to whom I say a heartfelt Thank you! and I love you!).

And now for some less lengthy updates…

Baby Fruit/Veggie: Baby is the size of a papaya this week, weighing in at 5.73 lbs and measuring 18.7 inches.

Baby Milestone: First time getting upset with mommy.  I was sitting slumped on the couch one night, and my back started hurting so I sat up with my back straight, making my stomach close in around her more tightly.  Baby totally KICKED me moments after– I have 4 witnesses.  Not a very nice way of telling me she’s squished, hmph!  But besides that incident, I still LOVE feeling the big swooshes and gentle nudges of her movement.

Mom Update: My uterus measures 35cm.  Belly button is looking weirder by the day.  Braxton Hicks contractions are frequent.  Swelling of the cankles and feet are very real and the urge to pee every hour is going strong.  Feeling excited, anxious, in love, and like I’m running out of time!

And that’s week 36!

Bumpdate | 33 Weeks

Week 33 and it’s Super Bowl weekend!

Okay ya caught me… Baby isn’t REALLY the size of a football, but more like the size of celery.  It’s hard to believe something so large is growing inside my stomach.

We’ve been taking child birth ed classes and they’ve been ROCKING MY WORLD and making me feel so empowered as a woman 💪🏼 It’s incredible what a woman’s mind and body are capable of and as a person of faith, I can’t help but trace physiology back to how God’s design of us was made with such intricate purpose (and a whole lot of TLC). There’s a lot of fear surrounding childbirth in America, and much of that fear arises from little knowledge, misinformation, and a black hole called THE INTERNET. So, lots to say about this! More to come maybe in a later post…

Cravings: I probably shouldn’t even write about this category because my cravings are seriously nonexistent!  “What are you craving?” is the second most common question I get asked (after “How are you feeling?”) nowadays, and I feel so much pressure to say something really cool or really weird!  Anywho, I’ve moved on from Ten Ren’s green milk tea to 85 Degree’s sea salt green milk tea.  It’s my current guilty pleasure.

A Lil Cozy Update: Conoon’s been experiencing symptoms of pregnancy too 😂 He’s been more emotional and gets up in the middle of the night to pee, which he never used to do and I find really silly. He’s been super supportive through all my highs and lows, and is making me pancakes rn so I’m like 😍 while writing this in bed. Ahh marriage.

February Goals:

  • Meditate for 5 minutes before going to bed.
  • Do 40 kegels and pelvic rocks every day.
  • Hydrate!!!

Things to Do in Kauai

Kauai is such a beautiful, unique place– it’s hard to go wrong when you vacation there.  Here’s a list of my favorite things that Conoon and I did during our week on the Garden Island.

Rent a Jeep Wrangler.

The upgrade is worth it!!  Renting a car is seriously expensive in Hawaii… but having a car with a removable top made driving around an adventure in itself.  Plus, it helped us soak in and appreciate the island even more~

Go hiking with a private tour guide.

Kauai is home to hundreds of beautiful trails for hiking.  While some trails are deeply embedded in the canyons of Waimea, others can be found right off a residential road.  One of the best decisions we made was to prebook a private waterfall tour before our visit.  Chris, our guide and photographer, took us to two different waterfalls: Wailua Falls and Hoopii Falls.

We started out with the more challenging of the two: Wailua.  While most people gaze down at the waterfall’s monstrosity off the side of a road, some know the way (and are brave enough) to trek down the steep, muddy trail.  The “hike” involved a lot of rope- and root-holding, but even at 27 weeks pregnant, I wasn’t nervous because of Chris’ calm demeanor and his clear instructions.  We got to go behind the waterfall (so exhilarating!!) and then spent the next 15 minutes swimming and relaxing in the water.

The hike to Hoopii Falls was an easy, scenic walk.  The fun came at the waterfall, where we jumped from the top into chilly waters below and floated down the stream.

Take a helicopter tour of the island.

While 35% of Kauai can be explored on land, a whopping 65% of the island can only be viewed from above.  Going on a heli tour was one of the coolest parts of our trip.  The tour gave us the opportunity to see jaw-dropping aerial views of beautiful canyons, mountains and beaches that we otherwise would not have seen.

Eat Japanese shaved ice.

At Shave Ice Tege Tege specifically.  Using a hand crank ice machine and syrups made with organic ingredients, they layer on shaved ice and syrup, alternating between the two, to create a mountain of sweet, fresh snow in a cup.  The green tea flavor was heaven, especially after an afternoon of hiking.

Drive around Waimea Canyon and stop for photo ops.

We drove up and around the canyon on our last morning, hours before our flight back home.  The fog that creeped in between the ranges made for some really awesome shots and the cloud coverage provided a lot of nice soft light for photos.  If we had more time (and the right shoes), we probably would’ve liked to hike some of the canyon’s trails.

Stop by beaches around the island.

The first photo is of Anahola Beach Park (Conoon’s favorite) and the second is of one near Princeville.

Eat poke from Fish Express in Lihue.

Best poke I’ve ever had. Period.  And it tasted even better after a long hike.  Their hot dishes, sandwiches and fried chicken are also worth a try!

Watch the sunset at Poipu Beach from the roof of the Jeep while munching on a Puka dog (or any other food).

Star gaze from the car off the side of a random road.

Swim and jacuzzi at night when the pool is free of other hotel guests.

Pick up a pineapple pie from McDonald’s!

This was more of a nostalgic, childhood “to-do” for me.  `When I was in elementary school, McDonald’s had pineapple pies on their menu and it was my absolute favorite!  (Do you remember when McDonald’s had pizzas too??).  I figured since Hawaii is obsessed with pineapples, McD’s would surely carry it there.  So good~  (Sidenote: when traveling to a foreign country, it’s fun to stop by McD’s because their foreign menus will often serve items that match that country’s cuisine.)

And most importantly…

…live in the moment and don’t over-plan.

A lot of the Favorites that came about were unplanned and happened because we gave ourselves the freedom to be creative with the time, resources and access we had in the moment.  Tight schedules and long to-do lists can lead to frustration, stress and disappointment in any vacation.  Especially in a place like Hawaii, trying to do too much is a big no-no.  So plan a few things here and there, but leave room for spontaneity and downtime, so the island vibes can take you where you need to be~
